Last week we posted summer reading suggestions from Pastor Mike. We also asked you to submit your own recommendations. Here are the books that you said you are reading.
Sister Cheryl is reading Jesus Mean and Wild: The Unexpected Love of an Untamable God by Mark Gali. Examining Mark's gospel, this book reveals, not a safe, "nice guy" Jesus, but a militant Messiah with a powerful love who dares believers to follow Him.
Sister Victoria suggests a book of fiction. The Shack by William P. Young. VIctoria says, "I recently read this novel and must say it’s an enlightening piece of literary work. It gives new meaning to learning about the freedom we have in Christ. It shows the love and grace of God….
Brother Farrell recommends Upon This Rock: The Miracles of a Black Church by Samuel G. Freedman. Farrell says this is an immeasurably rich book about a Black Baptist Church in Brooklyn. In this widely acclaimed bestseller, the author of Small Victories tackles another explosive issue, this time race in America, by taking an in-depth look at the pastor of a thriving black church in one of New York's most desperate slums.
Sister Kianga is getting ready for battle by reading The Handbook for Spiritual Warfare by Dr. Ed Murphy. This is described as the most thorough treatment available of biblical and theological foundations and practical concerns for spiritual warfare.
Pastor Tory suggests Finding My Way Home: Pathways to Life and Spirit by Henri Nouwen. He describes the book this way, “It is a simple read with powerful and transformative insight into: the path of power, peace, waiting, living and dying. This book will challange any reader to examine their personal theologies or understanding of each path and how it impacts their spiritual journey!”
I am going to recommend The Lord Is My Shepherd: Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-Third Psalm by Harold Kushner. This is one of the first books I read after I gave my life to Jesus. The Twenty-third Psalm—perhaps the most memorable and cherished chapter of the Bible—offers spiritual riches that can change a person’s life. By the way, Pastor Mike delivered a very powerful sermon series on the 23rd Psalm. Listen and be blessed.
