Day 1 – The place that I have been waiting my whole life to experience.

When I opened my eyes this morning, I lay in the bed wondering what the day would unfold. I knew that by the end of the day, I would be on a different continent, the continent that birthed my ancestors; Africa, the place that I have been waiting my whole life to experience. God is Amazing! I was on an emotional roller coaster. I was excited, anxious, happy and sad, all at the same time. All I could do was smile and thank God. I am grateful for this date with destiny.

I arrived at the airport at 8:00am for a 10:30am departure. We were thankful that it was President’s day so there was no traffic. Shout out to President Obama! When I arrived at JFK, Dawn was waiting outside for me with a huge smile on her face. She is such a blessing. I said to my husband, “she is on armor bearer duty – even at the airport.” I saw other familiar faces, Katrice, Akira, Keemya, and Sharon. As we made our way to Gate 26, we saw that the others had already arrived. Sitting at the gate waiting to board – I think it finally hit me. We are going to the Motherland! My eyes welled up with tears of joy.

As we boarded the plane, I couldn’t help but think that our ancestors came this way on ships, and now we would return by plane. The stone that the builders rejected would now become the head cornerstone! Feelings among them ranged from excitement to nervousness.

Our youngest traveler, Akira Carr, is only eighteen and already traveling abroad. What a wonderful opportunity for her. Thank God for her mother, Stephanie, for encouraging and supporting her daughter to do what she herself has not done. But, her day is coming! The mother of this voyage, Rosalie Lumbsy, is sixty-eight. She is accompanied by her daughter, Laurianne. This is her first time to Africa, another dream come true. A native of Barbados, she is returning home as well.

Please pray for us as we journey with God. I am including the names of all who are with us from First Corinthian Baptist Church. In addition to our immediate church family, Minister Segars is blessed to have her two older brothers with us as well. Please call us by name as you pray:

Akira Carr
Keemya Dickerson
Dawn Gant
Leon Hampton
Katrice Henderson
Laurianne Lumbsey
Rosalie Lumbsey
Carol Martin
Leslie Segars
Sharon Spence
Jerry Smalls
LaKeesha Walrond

We have a sixteen hour plane ride ahead of us. We pray for traveling mercies! God Bless you all!

Praise God for you all! You all are in my prayers “by name.” As I sit here listening to Yolanda Adams “You are great” reading your blog, I can’t help but to cry. My tears are tears of joy and I’m proud to be apart of a wonderful church family. You ladies and gentlemen are brave and I’m so proud. Your words are touching me deep within because you are speaking the truth about your journey to the motherland. It’s an honor to be able to be there, but with God nothing is impossible.

I myself would love to have been on the trip and I look forward to following you on your trip through your blog. God is great and it’s because of him that you all are there experiencing the joy of being disciples.

I love you so much and please have a wonderful time.
    Love Shellyce

Reading your first posting reminded me of my first visit to South Africa almost 20 years ago. Things were quite different then. Apartheid was still the controlling political and economic system and President Mandela was still in prison. Due to the world wide economic embargo, we had to fly to Lisbon, Portugal to fly into South Africa since no direct flights were allowed from the U.S. Our travel visas had the 30 + lawyers traveling to help the African National Congress write a new Constitution listed as “honorary colored” since African-Americans were legally considered to fall into the category of “Kaffirs” who were not eligible for such travel.
So please remind all that the soil they walk upon is sacred not just because our loving God created it (and liberated it) but also because it contains the blood and tears of those who fought so hard not so long ago so that you could arrive home to a totally different South Africa-a liberated South Africa.
We praise God for His everlasting Grace and Mercy. We will pray for all of you by name until your safe return. Give Dawn a special hug for me and Mama Lumsby et al.

I know that you are truly on a mission for GOD , may HE continue to Bless and keep all of you. Be careful in the bush and stay safe. Will continue to keep all of you lifted up in prayer.
