Family...Let's Talk About It!

On the heels of another awesome Discipleship Training, we have another relevant topic for discussion today! A question arose from a young adult last night seeking insight on how to zone in on her calling when the talents/gifts she has identified seem to be very diverse and unrelated. For example, a person who has a passion and gift set for law and the arts – two paths so distinct that the selection of one would seem to mean the rejection of the other.

Before we dig deeper into our sister’s question, it is important to note these discussions at Discipleship Training are in the context of living our best lives -- the life that God created us to live. In seeking to do so and trying to focus on our "gifts," we can fall into the trap of compartmentalizing those diverse, distinct, and seemingly unrelated talents and passions that uniquely make us us! We must remember when are dealing with a limitless God who calls us to be "in this world but not of it," so we cannot view our futures through the limited rationale of this world.

Back to the question…we cannot imagine many scenarios where law and the arts would combine. The question is do we have to? Pastor gave an example of a friend who began a career as a school teacher. However she had a passion for foreign missions (went to teach in Kenya) and inclination for business (came back to eventually become VP of a software company). She then followed a calling to ministry and continued that calling to a PHd and an academic faculty position. She is now the president of a theological seminary. Now, I share all of that because it would "seem" her early passions were "non related." However, once she "arrived" at her God appointed future, she used her passion for teaching, foreign ministry, and business acumen to serve as a seminary president. Wow, what a fit. Yet, I'm sure she didn't see that fit during her early years teaching!

It could be that our calling is to follow and focus (with as much foresight and discipline as possible) on what we understand our passions to be right now without the burden of "figuring out" how it will all come together. Can we free our minds enough to entrust what we cannot see and understand to the hands of God....and just walk? These are just my thoughts-let's talk about it family!
