Leaving Clark Kent Behind

Family...Let's Talk About It!

We had an extremely powerful Discipleship Training class on last evening! As the Spirit moved our discussion, pastor posed the thought that Jesus' ability to speak with authority to the things of this world was possibly due to the fact that he had transcended this world for a higher one. It would explain how people could be around him and not recognize who he really was while demons immediately identified him.

The Apostle Paul helps us to understand this more as he challenges us in Romans 12:2 to "...be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds...." It is that renewing that can allow us to transcend this world and let our thoughts, actions, faith, hope and love be framed by a higher point of reference.

Pastor then used the analogy of Superman to further this thought. On his home planet, Superman was just like everyone else. However, while on Earth, he found himself possessing a power that made him different! To disguise himself, he wore the costume of Clark Kent and hid his true identity until a crisis came. Superman's Clark Kent costume hid his power from the world and people did not recognize him for who he was.

Dare I say that the world (and even you and I) fail to recognize the power within us because of the costumes we wear! We claim to be endowed with the Spirit of God, which Jesus said would allow us to do GREATER things than he did. However, have we grown content with the frustration of speaking to the things of this world as one who is of this world?

The question before us today is simple, "What is your costume?"
